's -- krauthammer talks about -- romney does talk about foreign policy, a 20th century entitlement system, he talks about america and the need to be unapologetic. he talks about all these things. the problem romney has is he can't go a week talking about these things because he is tripping over his own words and gaffes whether the clint eastwood moment or running to criticize obama for the libya attacks and each and every time he tries to build momentum around these themes, build a larger place to get obama out -- he over shadows. >> you just said theme. that is what charles krauthammer says. he said if there were an over arching thing mitt romney was carrying from foreign policy -- >> you can only build that theme if you do it day in and day out and obama has done his theme which is romney is this rich guy who is going to outsource everything. he's been tripped up every now and then but by and large has been consistent. mitt romney has been his own worst enemy. >> that is the problem kelly. they don't have a big over arching theme as charles krauthammer says that carries them through a week where

of romney ryan. paul ryan clearly went off the president on foreign policy, listen to this from yesterday. >> turn on the tv and it reminds you of 1979 tehran, when they're burning our flags and capitals all around the world. they're storming our embassieem we've lost four of our diplomates and what is the signal that our government is sending the rest of the world? we're being equivocal on our values, we're being slow to speak up for individual rights, for human rights, for democracy. stuart: a reminder again, please, the president is addressing the u.n. today at around 10 a.m. eastern, but rather than meeting with the world's leaders, he'll appear on the view, roughly late morning eastern time. a few more details on ahmadnejad in new york. here for the united nations general assembly and will address the assembly tomorrow, that will be yom kippur. according to iran's news agency he'll meet with members of the occupy wall street movement and looks like he'll be staying with the one percenters, and staying in a hotel in a room that costs $775 per night. and the world leaders are assembled

weeks ago was the reverse. the obama campaign saying the romney campaign is coming off. you don't want to be on the defensive. what the debates should be about, it's a contest of character but it's also a contest of policy. staying on policy is more productive. i don't know that the american people take any of this seriously. the constant attack on the other. i think obama was saying this is the nature of politics. i think both camps have done things that are inappropriate. but politics as usual. megyn: can he change the momentum of this campaign when he gets to wednesday's debate? the president seems to have taken the lead in a couple swing states this week. so governor romney is clearly looking at that. >> what the president is taking the lead in most effectively. putting governor romney totally on the defensey which is not where he needs to be with the economy being what it is. and that is why it's so critical while he's on the same stage as president obama. no real filter in between. for him to turn around and say, mr. president, how can you make an affirmative case that we are bet
